Deptford Cinema: coming in 2015

I've reported before on local community efforts in Deptford to build a cinema in the only remaining London borough (Lewisham) to not have one. The team building the cinema recently sent out an update on progress, along with a call for anyone wanting to help to get involved and bring materials. The plan is to complete the cinema in early 2015.

The cinema holds public meetings at 4pm every Sunday in the cinema space. Deptford Cinema is on 39 Deptford Broadway, SE84PQ.

More information at the cinema's  Facebook, Twitter and website.

From the latest newsletter:

"Building work has been progressing well since just before Christmas. The ground floor has been raised to create three levels, and this will maximise the space in the basement for screenings.  Last Friday the staircase was installed and this week, the partitions will go up so the space will really begin to take shape!

Although it will be a number of weeks before the build is complete, the intention is to prioritise work in the basement so that screenings can begin as soon as possible. The cafe, dark room and studio will then be completed as quickly as possible.

The following are our most pressing building needs, if you can help in any way, please e-mail info@deptfordcinema.org

We need cheap options to source the following materials:
- Carpet
- Flooring
- Electrical Wiring
- Shopfront glazing
- Piping

We are also looking for a plumber and electrician who would be willing to do the required works for very little money, or even better, for free! If you know anyone who might want to volunteer, please ask them to get in touch by emailing info@deptfordcinema.org

GET INVOLVED IN BUILDING THE CINEMA

You will hopefully have seen our separate email earlier in the week about volunteering with the big build, but we just wanted to remind you that if you would like to get involved in any way, you are absolutely, 100%, totally welcome! You don't need any specialist skills or tools, just lots of enthusiasm and as much or as little time as you can give.

Building work takes place on weekday evenings from 5pm until 9pm and on Saturdays from 11am until 4pm. If you can help, please get in touch with Stuart by emailing him - stuartacollings@gmail.com
