He has just delivered a whopping $190million dollar-plus opening for Warner Bros with his new film Godzilla (reviewed here) so it is perhaps not surprising that Disney have snapped up Gareth Edwards to direct one of the Star Wars spin-off films that are planned to occur around the new sequel trilogy, of which JJ. Abrams is shooting the first as this is being written.

It’s not yet clear which of the potential standalone spin-offs Disney and Lucasfilm want Edwards to tackle, details overall are sketchy as to what characters, periods and stories will feature in these films.

Said Edwards on StarWars.com, "Ever since I saw Star Wars I knew exactly what I wanted to do for the rest of my life -- join the Rebel Alliance! I could not be more excited and honored to go on this mission with Lucasfilm". Edwards will work on this spin off alongside Gary Whitta, whose screenwriting credits include 2010's The Book of Eli starring Denzel Washington.
