David Lean's Brief Encounter is the centrepiece of a three-week series of films screened in Royal Festival Hall as part of the LOVE AT THE PICTURES season. The highly regarded film of thwarted love and societal pressures is being shown with a newly commissioned orchestral soundtrack by Southbank Centre's Resident Orchestra for three nights only.
The original film features Rachmaninov’s Piano Concerto No.2 throughout its soundtrack: A complete performance of Rachmaninov’s Piano Concerto No.2 precedes the screenings. Performances will be introduced by actor Lucy Fleming (daughter of the film's star Celia Johnson).
Ticketholders are encouraged to dress up in character, and join in themed activities from 6pm in the foyers.

For three weeks in August, Royal Festival Hall turns into a luxury 2000-seat cinema as we screen some of the greatest films ever made about love as part of our Festival of Love.
At the heart of the film series is a showing of Brief Encounter with live orchestral accompaniment by the London Philharmonic Orchestra. They perform Rachmaninov's Piano Concerto No.2, brought to fame by this iconic British love story.
