DocDays: Return to Homs plus Q&A with producer Orwa Nyrabia

Thursday 10 July 6.30pm

In the early days of the Syrian Civil War, rebel forces in the industrial heartland of Homs struck a blow at the opposition when they defied an army attempt to crush anti-government protests, thereafter establishing the city as a crucial stronghold. Following a tide of insurgents flooding in to support the besieged resistance, filmmaker Talal Derki arrived in Homs intent on bringing their harrowing story to international attention. There he found a totem for their struggle in Abdul Basset Saroot: once a Syrian football team goalkeeper, now a firebrand revolutionary, full of vitriol for both the Assad regime and the Western powers who refuse to intervene. Stealing through the city’s charred, twisted shell with Basset and his co-fighters, Derki renders their precarious existence with heart-stopping, adrenaline-pumping immediacy. But underlying the combat itself is an equally pressing narrative: that of young men radicalised by oppression.

We will welcome producer Orwa Nyrabia for a post-screening discussion.
